Description of Classes

  • Astronomy – Ever wonder how the constellations got their names? Or, how the stars were used to help early explorers travel to distant lands? How about how early cultures viewed the stars when they first gazed up into the heavens? Students will learn all this and more in our astronomy class. This class, like all the others we offer at ATG, will be multi-sensory and, most importantly, fun.
  • Creative Writing – (Acclaimed poet and author, Ryan Torres) Students will get the chance to study poetry, short fiction writing, and playwriting with an instructor who has been published and understands the ins and outs of the creative process. Students will share what they have written with their peers, workshop their writing, and be given the opportunity to submit their work to a literary magazine. The instructor, Ryan Torres, is a graduate of English, Professional Writing, and Literature from Kutztown University. Before joining the ATG family, he was a reporter for the Lebanon Daily News, D-Town Magazine, Southern Maryland Today, and the Bucks County Herald. His poetry has been published in such literary magazines as the Boston Literary Magazine, APIARY, Page and Spine, and many others. In his free time he also writes short stories and plays. One of his plays “Blame it on the Artist” won the 2012 Lebanon Community Theater Playwriting Contest. The Creative Writing class is a limited engagement: 3 weeks June 22, 2015 – July 10, 2015.
  • Language Arts – If your student struggles with understanding stories, text material, or answering any and all questions that follow class readings, then this class will not only help clear up the confusions that students have, but also prepare them for the coming school year. This multi-level course will cover a wide variety of reading material; including classic literature, poetry, vocabulary, grade-level comprehension workbooks, etc.
  • Mathematics – Our math course helps students perfect the skills that they need to solve mathematical equations through thought process. With the help of such programs as TouchMath and other multi-sensory teaching implementations, students will be better prepared for the upcoming school year.
  • Robotics – Learn the basics behind how modern-day robots work. Students will incorporate such learning tools as K’Nex into the class material in order to understand the lessons on a multi-sensory level. Robotics is sure to be an enjoyable and informative class for students who have an interest in what makes robots tick, move, and calculate. Supplies for Robotics: All supplies needed to build and robotics is included in the cost of the course!
  • Rocket Science – Students will build and launch several different types of model rockets. They will also learn the physics, history, and impact of rocket science. Students will be using Newton’s laws and equations to calculate the height and power of each rocket. They will go over safety rules and expectations. And, most of all, they will have lots of fun learning in this hands-on course. Supplies for Rocket Science: All supplies needed to build and fly rockets are included in the cost of the course!
  • Theater – (acclaimed Actor David Scott Howell) Learn the fundamentals of the theater, from production design to acting methods from ATG’s own, David Scott Howell. Howell is an Alumna of the Ensemble Theater Community School of acting in Eagles Mere, PA. He is currently on the Board of Governors of the Bryn Athyn Community Theater where he has been cast in every major production since 2013. He will bring his knowledge, experience, skill, and enthusiasm to the summer theater class/workshop. The Theater class is a limited engagement: 3 weeks, June 22, 2015 – July 10, 2015.
  • Wood Working – Learn a new skill that will last a lifetime. This fun, hands-on class introduces students to the materials, drawings, and tools used in the joinery, safety guidelines, assembly, preparation, and finishing of a woodworking project. The course uses a project that directs students to develop working drawings from which a furniture piece is built.

  • Speech Therapy – ATG offers Speech Therapy with a friendly speech pathologiest who will help students with their phonation, resonance, fluency, voice, respiration, and other aspects of social communication.
  • Wilson Reading System – Wilson is an effective, highly-structured remedial program that directly teaches the structure of language to students who have not been successful with any other teaching strategies. ATG’s certified Wilson instructors are prepared and eager to teach your student this summer.
